School of Social Work Newsletter

Another way we stay connected to our community.

October 2018

What is the role of a school of social work? Preparing graduates for excellence in their social work careers is at the forefront—so you can truly say that the profession of social work is our classroom. Together with our students, graduates and a dynamic and engaged professional community, the School of Social Work at Adelphi University promotes student-centered and research-informed curricula, faculty scholarship and community-centered programs. We provide exceptional leadership to advance knowledge, skills and values for social work here in New York and around the nation.

I’m proud of how the School puts this into action by partnering with agencies, schools and nonprofit organizations that provide services to diverse populations. These partners offer our students a wide range of internship and fieldwork opportunities. Students can also gain valuable experience right on our Garden City campus: The School of Social Work hosts the Center for Nonprofit Leadership , the Institute for Adolescent Trauma Treatment and Training and the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program , all of which offer students valuable experience while providing vital services to members of our community.

I’m excited to share our accomplishments in this inaugural e-newsletter. You’ll learn about Dr. Dan Kaplan’s exciting new Social Work Practice Fellows program and Dr. Diann Cameron-Kelly’s research on generative fatherhood and its impact on a child’s developing prosocial skills . You’ll meet our students and alumni . You’ll see how our commitment to students, innovative approach and productive faculty have earned us high national rankings.

As dean of the School of Social Work for more than 15 years, I continue to be extremely proud of our accomplishments and welcome the updates we receive from alumni and friends. I look forward to hearing your news and welcome your questions or comments. You can reach me at asafyer@adelphi.edu or 516.887.4354.

Cordially,
