In honor of National Professional Social Work Month, Adelphi hosted an assortment of workshops, information sessions and support groups during the month of March. Events were attended by students from all of our campuses, and included degree information sessions, clinical workshops on topics such as autism in adults and cross-generational trauma, a support group for bilingual professionals and suicide prevention training.
The 10th annual Social Action Day on March 5 centered around the theme “Dreaming of a Greater America: Immigration Without Borders.” The event featured keynote speaker Cesar Vargas, Esq., the first undocumented attorney admitted to the New York State Bar, as well as presentations by immigration activists on community organizing, domestic violence in the Muslim community, violence against LGBTQ people in immigration prisons, education reform and resettlement services for refugees. The 300 social work students in attendance also got the chance to participate in a Story Collection Project and share their “immigration story,” which will be added to a new University archive.
On March 24, Adelphi social work students joined social work professionals and students from other schools of social work to lobby New York State legislators on a variety of pressing social issues.
