Redefining the Addiction Landscape Within the Contexts of Historical Trauma Theory, Recovery Oriented Systems of Care and Human Rights Movements

This presentation will trace the five stages of addiction treatment epics, from moral, to 12 steps, to disease model, to bio-psycho-social, to trauma centric. Historical trauma will be introduced within the broader context of the Recovery Oriented Systems of Care. This new trauma centric landscape contains the nascent third reality that joins harm reduction and abstinent models in a newly formed continuum of care. Yet, the new landscape has two competing poles, one of human rights, which embraces the legacies of genocide and slavery, and the other, managed care which is concerned with cost containment. 

We will examine the possibilities of these current enlightened paradigms that seek to generate an ecological approach to well-being in a proposed conservative political era. Social determinates will be used to assess addiction as human behavior within oppressive social environments. With the template of SAMHSA’s eight dimensions health, we will give instruction in using the medicine wheel for use for individual, family, community, society and environment (mother earth) well-being. Lastly, we will assess each person’s preparedness to participate in this new landscape through the four R’s of readiness, rationale, resources and relationships.

Training Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to: 

  • Name the Eight Dimensions of Wellness according to SAMHSA
  • Define trauma-informed services for the treatment of addictions
  • List the core principles of ROSC
  • Identify three aspects of the new Trauma Centric Landscape
  • List three benefits of using the medicine wheel with persons with a criminal, mental health and/or addiction histories
  • Create four brief statements of preparedness to participate as a change agent in this new landscape through readiness, rationale, resources and relationship inventory

Continuing Education Credit

  • Social Workers: Adelphi University School of Social Work is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0032.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education credits. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEUs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”
