Emotional and Binge Eating, Chronic Dieting, and Shame: What Therapists Need To Know

“I’m an emotional eater.” I have to lose weight if I want to be healthy.” I know what I’m supposed to do, but I just don’t do it.” “My eating is out of control.”

These types of comments are common in our culture, and frequently make their way into the clinical setting. While the treatment of eating disorders requires specialized training, it’s important for all therapists to understand the paradigm shift happening in our field when it comes to eating problems and weight concerns. After all, societal norms regarding eating, weight, and health affect every client we work with, regardless of body size.

In this full day training you’ll discover how recovery from overeating and bingeing is more than a matter of self-control, weight loss, or even understanding the emotional triggers. Judith will teach you how to integrate multiple facets of treatment—including the attuned eating framework, the role of shame and self-compassion, emotional regulation, body image strategies, understanding weight stigma and the Health At Every Size® paradigm—so that clients have the tools necessary to end overeating and develop a healthy relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves.

Judith will address these important topics using a variety of teaching approaches including lively didactic material, experiential exercises and small group interactions.

Participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the relationship between diet culture, eating problems and weight concerns.
  • Explain the five components of the diet-binge cycle.
  • Teach clients the three steps of attuned eating.
  • Identify attitudes toward body size and weight stigma.
  • Analyze the process of translating emotional issues into eating and weight loss focus that results in shame
  • Describe techniques to regulate emotional distress without turning to food.
  • Utilize at least three strategies to cultivate a healthy body image.
  • Explain how the tenets of the Health At Every Sizeâ paradigm support clients in practicing positive self-care behaviors.

About the Speaker

Judith Matz

Judith Matz is the co-author of two books on the topics of eating and weight struggles.

Beyond a Shadow of a Diet: The Comprehensive Guide to Treating Binge Eating Disorder, Compulsive Eating and Emotional Overeating has been called “the new bible” on this topic for professionals. The Diet Survivor’s Handbook: 60 Lessons in Eating, Acceptance and Self-Care was a #1 bestseller on Amazon and a favorite resource for therapists to use with clients. She is also the author of Amanda’s Big Dream, a children’s book that helps kids to pursue their dreams – at any size!

Judith has a private practice in Skokie, IL, where she focuses her work with clients who want to get o the diet/binge rollercoaster and learn to feel at home in their bodies. Through her individual counseling, groups, workshops, presentations and books, Judith has helped thousands of people to develop self-care skills that increase physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing without a focus on the pursuit of weight loss. Through educational programs, she is dedicated to helping people end the preoccupation with food and weight. Judith received her MSW at University of Michigan, and earned her post-graduate certificate at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, where she trained in the treatment of eating disorders.

Judith is a frequent contributor to the Psychotherapy Networker magazine and a popular speaker at national conferences. Descriptions of her work have appeared in the media including the New York Times, LA Times, Allure, Fitness, Self, Shape, Today’s Dietitian, Diabetes Self-Management, NBC News Chicago, Huffington Post Live, and she appears in the documentary America The Beautiful 2.

Continuing Education Credit

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education credits. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEUs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”
