Graduate Social Work Admissions

MSW Admission Requirements

Requirements for admission to the Adelphi University’s School of Social Work graduate programs are based on prior academic performance, values that are congruent with the social work profession, and paid and/or volunteer human service experience. Admission requirements include:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a strong background in the liberal arts and sciences
  • Personal characteristics and qualifications related to successful professional performance consonant with the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics
  • A minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA on a four-point scale
  • Paid or volunteer experience in the human services preferred
  • An interview, at the discretion of the school’s admissions committee

MSW Admissions Steps

  • Complete the online application for graduate admission
  • Request a minimum of two professional reference letters—preferably from supervisors in social agencies, college faculty or other non-relatives who are equipped to evaluate your readiness for graduate study
  • Submit all official college transcripts
  • Upload a personal statement of why you have chosen to study in the field of Social Work at Adelphi University
  • Human Service Professional Applicants must also submit verification of their employment history.

Advanced Standing Program Applicants

Advanced Standing program applicants must also submit evidence of the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from a CSWE-accredited social work program within the past five years
  • Grades of B or better in all social work courses. In some cases, additional courses may be required.
  • Two professional letters of recommendation:
    • One must be from your field liaison/field instructor from your senior or junior year, however, there is a preference for senior year instructor recommendations.
    • A faculty member recommendation is preferred for the second letter.

Application Deadline

Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Priority will be given to applicants who submit their complete application packet by July 15 in consideration of admission for the Fall semester. Priority admission for the Accelerated Spring Start program is November 1. Priority admission for the MSW Advanced Standing applicants will be extended to individuals who submit their completed application by March 15. The Field Education Department can not guarantee a field practicum beyond the priority deadline dates.
