Objectives

  1. Evaluate the scientific research that links diet and nutrition to mental illness and its implications for treatment.
  2. Specify how certain micronutrients and macro nutrients affect mood and behavior in clients.
  3. Incorporate ethical and scope of practice considerations relative to integrated and nutritional medicine with respect to your own professional discipline.
  4. Communicate integrative and nutritional methods as they relate to client psycho-education.
  5. Present six nutritional methods for treating clients who present with mood lability.
  6. Correlate gluten and casein sensitivity with the presentation of depression, psychosis and ASD in clients.
  7. Present evidence-based protocols for nutritional and herbal approaches for six DSM-5™ categories.
  8. Demonstrate the use of a food mood assessment to evaluate client eating patterns and how those patterns may influence their mental health.
  9. Evaluate drug-nutrient-herbal interactions for clients in order to prevent side effects of polymedicine use.
  10. Present stage-specific anaerobic and aerobic exercise and self-care methods to decrease dissociative symptoms in clients.
  11. Teach breathing techniques to reduce hyperventilation and improve focus among clients with anxiety disorders.
  12. Identify the evidence for the use of essential fatty acids for anxiety and depression.
  13. Investigate the science for the “second brain”; the gut-brain axis communication system of neurotransmitters.
  14. Describe on the science and application of circadian rhythm as it contributes to depression, PTSD and bipolar disorder.
  15. Evaluate the impact of blood sugar on mood disorders.

About the Instructor

Leslie Korn

Leslie Korn, PhD, MPH, LMHC, is a renowned integrative medicine clinician and educator specializing in the use of nutritional, herbal and culinary medicine for the treatment of trauma and emotional and chronic physical illness. She is known for her dynamism and humor as a speaker. She has provided over 50,000 hours of treatment in private practice for diverse populations.

She completed her graduate education in the departments of psychiatry and public health at Harvard Medical School and her life training in the jungle of Mexico where she lived and worked alongside local healers for over 25 years. She directed a naturopathic medicine and training clinic facilitating health, culinary and fitness retreats. She is licensed and certified in nutritional therapy, mental health counseling, and bodywork (Polarity and Cranial Sacral and medical massage therapies) and is a Board approved clinical supervisor.

She introduced somatic therapies for complex trauma patients in out-patient psychiatry at Harvard Medical school in 1985 and as a teaching consultant in ethnomedicine to the Trauma Clinic, Boston in 1994. She was in private practice in Boston and a wellness consultant to MHFA for 15 years. She is the former clinical director and faculty of New England School of Acupuncture and faculty at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine.

She is the author of the seminal book on the body and complex trauma: Rhythms of Recovery: Trauma, Nature and the Body, Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health, Eat Right Feel Right, The Good Mood Kitchen and the forthcoming, Natural Woman (Shambhala 2019). She was a Fulbright scholar in Women’s traditional medicine in Mexico and an NIH-funded scientist, in mind/body medicine. She is in private practice in Integrative Medicine for mental health, provides case consultations and serves as the research director at the non- profit think tank, Center for World Indigenous Studies where she designs culinary and herbal medicine programs with tribal communities and agencies engaged in developing integrative medicine programs.

How to Become a Certified Mental Health Integrative Medicine Provider

If you are a graduate level mental health provider in good standing with your State licensing Board:

Step One: Complete the Training (18 hours).

Step Two: The candidate must attest that he/she has conducted a minimum of 20 sessions with clients in which nutritional and integrative medicine approaches were discussed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Documentation of Eligibility and Requirements 1. Completed certification application form 2. Copy of the candidate’s State license 3. Copies of CEU certificates or transcripts evidencing successful completion of coursework 4. Attestation statement

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education credits. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEUs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”


Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows.  We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
