M.S.W. Programs

This web page is being reviewed and is expected to be updated for the Fall 2009 semester. In the meantime, please contact the department's administrative office for updates about academic requirements.

The Master's Degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) prepares students for advanced social work practice in a variety of human service settings. The 64-credit program combines core courses in the foundations of social work with supervised field instruction to give students experience in applying social work theories to professional practice. The program fosters an abiding commitment to professional values and social justice and equips students with knowledge and skills for social work practice with a wide range of clients and diverse communities.

All first-year M.S.W. students are required to take 10 core courses in a set sequence. The plan of study in the foundation year includes eight required courses plus a minimum of 600 hours of supervised field instruction. In the advanced year of study, students complete seven required courses and one elective, plus a minimum of 600 hours of supervised field instruction.

Adelphi offers students various options to complete the M.S.W. including:

All students must complete the required courses within four years of matriculation and fulfill residency requirements by taking 10 or more credits in two successive semesters.

The M.S.W. program is conveniently offered at all Adelphi locations. Students may take classes at the main Garden City campus or at the Hauppauge, Manhattan, and Hudson Valley (Poughkeepsie) Centers. To meet students' needs for flexible scheduling, classes are held during the day, evening, and on Saturdays in Garden City, and in the evenings and Saturdays at the Centers. A summer session extends from the end of May to the beginning of August.

Students may explore their interest in social work without formally applying to the M.S.W. program by applying for nonmatriculated status. This allows them to enroll in up to 6 credits for two successive semesters for a total of 12 credits. Students must set up an appointment and bring a copy of their transcript.
