Listed below are the responsibilities of the field Instructor, student and faculty liaison. For more information, consult the Field Manual.
Field Instructor Responsibilities
- Provide 1 1/2 hours of individual supervision per week. Group supervision may also be included, but does not replace individual supervision.
- Assist the student with the integration of acquired social work practice skills into their field experience.
- Act as a guide to the agency, providing student with opportunities to meet employees and to collaborate with agency personnel, attend staff meetings, case conferences, and provide in-services.
- Keep student and faculty liaison informed about progress or concerns that arise during the placement.
- Facilitate learning that reflects the Learning Agreement and other related forms.
- Meet for evaluation with faculty liaison and student once a term.
- Ensure that student has suitable work space and access to a telephone and computer as required.
- Recommend student grade.
Student Responsibilities
- Meet weekly with field instructor to integrate classroom learning into practice and to discuss any concerns that may arise with your placement.
- Seek out opportunities to meet other agency employees and to collaborate with them, as appropriate. Initiate activities with the approval of field instructor.
- Use the Learning Agreement to develop a plan of activities that will meet your and your field instructor's learning objectives.
- Immediately notify your faculty liaison of any concerns or difficulties with classroom or practicum experiences.
Faculty Liaison Responsibilities
- A faculty advisor is assigned to each student and also serves as the liaison to the field instructor and agency.
- Meets at least once a term with the student, the field instructor and, when appropriate, the task supervisor. At this meeting, the Learning Agreement and student progress will be discussed, including observations on completed activities and study.
- Responsible for providing guidance to the student and field instructor to ensure that placement activities support the mission of the School of Social Work.
- Assists the student and field instructor with any concerns that may arise during the placement. Most issues should first be addressed directly between the student and the field instructor.
- Assists the student with questions and/or concerns about the academic experience.
- Serves as a link between the School of Social Work and the field placement agency. The faculty liaison will assist the field instructor in updating requests for students, updating placement information, and keeping the field instructor and student apprised of learning opportunities associated with the School.
- Assigns the field grade.
