SWK 101: Introduction To Social Welfare And Human Services 3 credits This course is appropriate for underclassmen who are interested in careers in the helping professions, particularly social work, or who desire to learn more about social institutions and at-risk populations. It examines social welfare as a societal institution responding to human needs. Emphasis is placed on the resources available to assist individuals, families, groups, and communities cope with the pressure and demands on their lives. Attention is paid to the unique role of government and other public entities in the provision of resources. The nature of professional helping relationships is studied with a particular emphasis on social work. Students will become familiar with contemporary social problems and their impact on individuals, families, and groups; gain a beginning understanding of the role of social agencies and develop a beginning awareness of social welfare and the social work profession.
