Promoting Resilience and Recovery: Group Work with Adult Survivors of Childhood Trauma

This workshop will focus on the use of groups for clients with histories of childhood trauma. Understanding the unique benefits of group treatment for this population and the relative merits of different types of groups will be examined. The stages of group development and common group themes in the beginning, middle, and ending phases of treatment will be identified. A detailed discussion of the role and tasks of the group worker will be included. Common obstacles to growth and change, as well as challenges to the worker such as transference, counter-transference, and indirect trauma, will also be identified and discussed.

About the Instructor:
Carolyn Knight
Ph.D., M.S.W. is a professor of social work at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Baltimore County. Dr. Knight is a licensed social worker with 20 years of experience working individually and in groups with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She is the author of Working with Adult Survivors of Childhood Trauma: Strategies and Skills for Helping Professionals and Process-Oriented Group Therapy for Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse, as well as numerous articles on working with childhood trauma survivors.

Credentialing Information: Program information has been submitted for approval to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Education and Training for 6 training credits toward earning or recredentialing the CASAC.

Continuing Education Credits: 6 Continuing Education Credits will be given through the New York State Chapter of the NASW. Certificates of Attendance will be issued day of program.
