This workshop will focus on addiction from a family systems perspective and examine the ways in which family functioning serves to maintain the disorder. As chemical dependency is recognized as a family disease, treatment providers must view the addicted individual within the context of the family system. Circular causality, family hierarchy, and parental conflict will be explored as contributory factors. Characteristics of the chemically dependent family and clinical techniques will be demonstrated through videotaped case presentations. Means of increasing the family’s awareness and ability to impact change will be discussed.
