Social workers are increasingly being asked to provide evidence based treatment to their clients in both mental health and substance abuse treatment settings. Many social workers face challenges in implementing evidence based practice, such as lack of training and systemic obstacles. This workshop is designed to help participants contend with the challenges they face in implementing evidence based practices in mental health and substance abuse treatment settings. It provides an introduction to evidence based practice in mental health and substance abuse treatment. The concepts and components of evidence based practice as well as the rationale for using evidence based practice will be defined and discussed. Evidence based practices that have been identified for mental health and substance abuse treatment settings will be examined. Skills that practitioners need to utilize in evidence based practice, including critical thinking and determining levels of evidence, will be discussed. Obstacles and other concerns of using evidence based practice will be considered.
