Today’s practitioners are challenged to create treatment paradigms that meet the needs of substance abusers who suffer from a range of mental health problems. While it is well known that mental illness and depression cause a vulnerability to substance abuse and that substance abuse is often misdiagnosed as mental illness, the intersection of these problems is still poorly understood. Understanding of the psychodynamics of substance abuse and its relationship to a variety of mental health problems is critical to providing treatment. This workshop will address theories of the etiology of substance abuse. There will be a focus on psychodynamic theories, specifically drive theory and ego psychology. The ways in which psychodynamic perspectives influence the diagnosis and treatment of substance abusing clients will be examined. The practice implications for the understanding psychodynamic theory will be explained. The instructor will describe current best practices in substance abuse treatment. Small group exercises and case presentations will allow participants to apply theory to practice in various settings. Additionally, the workshop will address the most widely used forms of substance abuse treatment and their usefulness in addressing the mental health needs that clients present.
