This is an intensive training program designed for the experienced clinician. Responding to the recent emphasis on co-occurring disorders and the challenges of working with complex clients, this certificate program provides an integrated and sophisticated approach to understanding theoretical perspectives, treatment approaches and cutting edge evidence-based knowledge essential for effective addictions assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. This program focuses on working with a variety of client populations including individual adults, adolescents, and children as well as their families. Who Should Attend
- M.S.W. graduates or other clinicians who have completed an advanced degree in a related human service profession.
- Clinicians who are currently working in the addictions field.
- Clinicians who are currently working in a related field and want to inform their practice with new, sophisticated knowledge.

Program Components
Core Seminar (1.5 hrs.): The Core Seminar is an ongoing course with a curriculum that focuses on various theories of addiction as well as many aspects of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. The Core Seminar will be taught by a lead instructor and a team of four additional faculty who are addiction treatment experts from the Long Island area.
Integrative Seminar (1.5 hrs.): The Integrative Seminar is an ongoing case conference/consultation that immediately follows the Core Seminar and is led by a senior clinician. Participants will bring case material from their own practice experience to help understand and synthesize the knowledge gained throughout the program.
Both the Core and Integrative Seminars will meet as one three-hour class on Tuesday evenings, approximately twice monthly from October through June (totaling 16 sessions for the year).
Required Workshops: There will be eight required full-day workshops for the program. The instructors for the workshops are "Visiting Faculty" from outside the Long Island area.

Admission Requirements
- Proof of degree, i.e., copy of transcript or diploma from an advanced degree program in social work, mental health, or another human services discipline
- Current résumé
- Letter of recommendation from a supervisor or colleague who is familiar with your work
- Brief statement on what you hope to gain from the program

Certificate Requirements
The Certificate will be awarded at the end of the program. There are 16 three-hour evening sessions and eight full-day (six-hour) training sessions, for a total of 96 continuing education/training hours.

About the Core Seminar Faculty:
Kevin Wadalavage II , M.A., LMHC, CASAC, MAC, NCAC, is the vice president of Outreach Project and has worked in the substance abuse field since 1981 as a street worker, counselor, program director, trainer, and administrator. He currently oversees two outpatient clinics in NYC and is extensively involved in training substance abuse clinicians at Outreach Training Institute. He is a board member of the Institute for Professional Development in the Addictions and has participated on substance abuse advisory committees at both state and local levels.
Susanne Smoller, L-RCSW, CASAC, CPP, ACSW, is an independent organizational consultant specializing in substance abuse and HIV/AIDS. She has held positions as a line worker, program director, case manager, crime victim advocate, teacher, and trainer. Ms. Smoller has consulted on research grants and provided technical assistance and consultation for federal grantees on program sustainability and staff training needs. Ms. Smoller was named Social Worker of the Year in 1998 by the Suffolk division of the National Association of Social Work.
Mary Lou Jones, M.S.W., D.S.W., is the executive director of South Shore Child Guidance Center, working in both the addiction and mental health fields for over 25 years. She completed an extensive training program on the treatment of Sexual Abuse at Columbia University. Dr. Jones is on the Health and Welfare Council Board of Long Island, is chair of the Coalition on Voluntary Mental Health Agencies in Nassau County, and is president of the Agency Executive Council Board of the United Way of Long Island.
Nicholas R. Lessa, M.A., LCSW, CASAC, has been a leader, trainer, and innovator in the field of substance abuse treatment for 25 years. He is the CEO of Inter-Care Ltd., a comprehensive substance abuse treatment center in Manhattan. He is the co-author of Concise Guides to Mental Health Substance Use Disorders. He was also trained to use and teach Motivational Interviewing with its developers, Bill Miller, Ph.D., and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D.

Credentialing Information and Continuing Education
This program has been submitted for approval for a total of 96 continuing education/training hours.
Social Work CEUs are given through the New York State Chapter of the NASW.
CASAC Training Hours: Program information has been submitted for approval to the New York State Office of Addiction and Substance Abuse Services Education and Training for credits toward earning or recredentialing.
Psychology CE Credits: Adelphi University is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer Continuing Education credits for psychologists. Adelphi maintains responsibility for the program and its content. To apply for CE credits, contact Marge Burgard at 516.877.4835 and present your Certificate of Attendance. There is a $10 processing charge. Attendance at the entire conference is required. No partial credit is given.
