As a social worker, you will play an integral role in assisting people to overcome obstacles, make significant changes, and acquire the strengths and abilities they need to live fuller, happier lives. I welcome you to the Adelphi Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) program—your gateway to a career in human and social services.

For over thirty years, the B.S.W. program–the first such program on Long Island—has prepared students to meet the challenge of helping individuals, groups, families and communities, to serve as an advocate for systems change and to support efforts to improve social justice. Our program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and our graduates go on to rewarding careers in such diverse areas as child welfare, social services, developmental disabilities, corrections, health, mental health, and addiction services.

Every course you take, every assignment, and every field experience will impact your understanding of people and the difficulties facing them as they struggle in diverse environments. Your focus— and that of your professors —will be on your development as a social worker, and how the material you study assists you in that process.

A nurturing learning environment is the hallmark of the B.S.W. program which is conveniently offered at Garden City, and the Manhattan and Hauppauge Centers. In each location, you have the advantage of small classes, individualized attention, and outstanding faculty dedicated to your success.

The School of Social Work has developed several routes to the B.S.W. degree. You may declare a major in social work in your freshman year, or you may transfer from another college. You can take advantage of an important innovation in social work education – the Advanced Standing program leading to the Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree. This opportunity enables eligible B.S.W. graduates to earn the M.S.W. in only one additional year of full-time study.

I encourage you to consider the many merits of an Adelphi social work education and invite you to come visit us or contact me with any questions you may have.
