Kristina Monti, LCSW, Ph.D. Candidate

Doctoral Student

Kristina Monti’s research in substance use disorders, population health and program evaluation are influenced by her 15 years of experience as a clinician, clinical administrator and adjunct professor.

Through the various positions she has held at large, urban health systems, she has been involved in practice-based research in population health initiatives and system transformation that aimed to address social determinants of health and the associated chronic medical and behavioral health conditions. Specifically, Monti has worked on evaluating strategies to effectively address the high utilization of emergency rooms and detoxification services by persons who are homeless and have a substance use and/or psychiatric disorder.

Her interest in scholarship was further influenced by her experience as a graduate assistant, where she worked on evaluating the effect an addiction-specific elective had on MSW students’ attitudes toward substance users and the philosophy of harm reduction. Monti’s interest in the intersection of social work and addiction policy, treatment and education was strengthened when she completed a historical analysis on the differential racialization of substances in the United States and the intersection with the social work profession from 1920‒present day.

She is currently employed as the director of special projects at the Mount Sinai Psychiatric ER and her current doctoral research is a qualitative inquiry into substance users’ transition from opioid analgesics to heroin, utilizing the theoretical framework of Life Course Theory. Monti is interested in teaching at a social work program and continuing to conduct research in areas of addiction, mental illness and population health.
