Dean Andrew Safyer and Associate Dean Peter Chernack named to leadership roles within professional organizations.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be faster than average growth in the social work field during this decade due to the growing demand in the health care and social service industries. Adelphi University has long been a leader in educating today’s professionals in the field offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in Social Work. Recently, the School’s Dean, Andrew Safyer, and Associate Dean Peter Chernack have been recommended by their peers and named to leadership roles within professional organizations.

Dr. Andrew Safyer has been appointed a member of the Commission on Accreditation (COA) for the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The CSWE is a nonprofit national association representing more than 2,500 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Their goal is to ensure and enhance the quality of social work education for a professional practice that promotes individual, family, and community well-being, and social and economic justice.

Dr. Safyer’s position on the COA makes him part of a team of professionals responsible for the critically important function of maintaining and advocating for quality in social work education through its accreditation/candidacy of more than 730 social work programs in the United States. In addition, the commission acts as the policy body for developing and interpreting accreditation standards and assuring that policies and procedures are fairly and consistently applied to all social work programs.  Dr. Safyer says he “is proud and honored to serve as a commissioner with other esteemed colleagues within the academy.”

Dr. Peter Chernack ’80, M.S.W. ’81, D.S.W. ’01 is the newly appointed president of the National Association of Social Workers’ New York State Chapter (NASW-NYS). He will serve one year as President-Elect and two as Chapter President. The NASW is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, the New York State chapter (which excludes New York City) has almost 10,000 members.

NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies. Dr. Chernack says, “Together with the board and our partners, I will work to promote the profession, advocate for our member’s interests, and advance opportunities for continuing education and professional development.”

Dr. Chernack also serves as Adelphi University’s faculty director of the Center for Non-Profit Leadership.
