RTR: An Experiential Model for Treating Relational Trauma

Research in neurobiology has made clear that our emotions are experienced and processed by the body as well as the mind and that healing from the kind of trauma that living with addiction engenders requires a mind/body approach. Psychodrama and sociometry allow the body to participate in the therapeutic milieu. In this experiential workshop we’ll look at how to use sociometry to explore trauma and addiction as well as to “warm up” a group, connect them with each other and their personal “stories”.

RTR is designed to fit into any treatment program clinic or one to one practice.  It is a multi-sensory model of trauma treatment that uses psychodrama, sociometry, journaling and guided imagery. Sociometry allows for many small connections with self and others. Working in small and incremental moments of connection and repair can help clients to move in and out of their own freeze state without becoming overwhelmed and stuck. This process can also help clients to chunk down and regulate overwhelming emotions without becoming flooded. Relationship repair (RTR) within the many moments of sharing in dyads and clusters that strengthens skills of opening up, reaching out, sharing and then listening to others do the same.

Learning Objectives

  1. To expand a restricted range of affect that can be the result of trauma.
  2. To allow the group to become comfortable identifying, articulating and sharing emotion.
  3. To allow the group to connect with each other around vulnerable emotions, share and take in sharing and support.
  4. To teach and develop emotional literacy and emotional intelligence.
  5. To have clients learn to “tolerate” and talk about painful emotions so that they are less likely to act them out and relapse over them.
  6. To have clients learn to “tolerate” and talk about positive and self-affirming emotions so that they are lesslikely to relapse over them.
  7. To educate clients as to the range of symptoms that can accompany relationship trauma and the ACoA Trauma Syndrome

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education credits. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEUs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”
