Missed Diagnosis and Failed Treatment Opportunities: Why Clinicians Should Know about Invisible Autism in Adults

Many individuals with autism spectrum conditions make it into late childhood, adolescence and adulthood with inaccurate diagnoses; some receive maltreatment and punitive approaches for perceived non-compliance when in fact, characteristics related to autism can impact therapeutic outcomes. This training is for any mental health worker who has contact with individuals presenting with depression, anxiety, phobias, medication difficulties, PTSD, eating disorders and other conditions that often co-occur with autism, but are misinterpreted as the primary presenting condition. Clinicians will leave this training reconsidering their past and current clients with a new, enhanced understanding of how so many individuals–particularly people of color and women–are missed with this condition.

Learning Objectives
1. Participants will analyze the characteristics of autism in less obviously presenting clients through the lens of the DSM 5 changes.
2. Participants will explain possible adaptations and accommodations that such clients may require for a successful therapeutic relationship.
3. Participants will be able to describe female presentations of autism.

Dena Gassner

About the Instructor

Dena Gassner is a Ph.D. Candidate in Social Welfare at Adelphi University and has a M.S.W. from the University of Kentucky. She is on the Board of Directors for the Arc US and provides articles to many publications nationwide. She has contributed chapters to Scholars With Autism: Achieving Dreams and College for Students with Disabilities. She is an award winning advocate for autism related issues and has presented at multiple national conferences (Autism Society; Arc US; TASH; IMFAR) and has expanded her outreach internationally to include the United Nations in Geneva, University of Birmingham (UK) and the team of researchers at Cambridge working with Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen.

  • CASAC training hours: Program information has been submitted to the New York State Office of Addiction and Substance Abuse Services Education and Training for earning or re-credentialing for CASAC clock hours.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education credits. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEUs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”
